Planning for Your Shore Excursions

If you’re one of those cruisers who enjoy getting off the ship and exploring port cities and their countryside, here are a few tips to make your experience more enjoyable.
- Before you sail, learn as much as you can about the ports you are visiting. You’ll receive a map of each ports on the ship, but you’ll have a fuller experience if you know where to go to match your interests beyond the port area.
- Dress comfortably, top and bottom. Maybe take a jacket if you have weather concerns. And don’t forget the suntan lotion if you are sailing the hotter zones closer to the equator.
- Relax a bit and see what’s going on in local life, the people and their traditions. Learn from the locals. This will enrich your travel experience.
- English is usually well understood, especially in the port areas, but also be conscious of the importance of body language. Be proactive in saying hello and introducing yourself.
- Try the local cuisine and delicacies. Also, sometimes it’s cheaper to drink in port shops rather than on the ship.
- When visiting local shops, haggle for the best price. Actually, you’ll find many of the locals expect that and enjoy it.
- Make sure you have your camera or digital device for lots of pictures. If they allow you, take pictures with the locals.
- Take cash and your credit cards, but limit how much cash or how many cards you take. Make sure you notify your credit card companies about your travel plans.
- Make sure you have the appropriate identification with you when you go ashore. The cruise staff can advise you on what you need. Make sure you know when to return to your ship.
- Cruise lines often offer on-ship seminars regarding the ports of call and ideas for shopping and ways to enhance your port experience.
